Children`s Eyes
Experts say 5-10 percent of pre-schoolers and 25 percent of school-aged children have vision problems. Early identification of a child's vision problem is crucial because, if left untreated, some childhood vision problems can cause permanent vision loss.
Eye exams for children are extremely important. It is recommended that you have your child's eyes checked annually up to the age of 16 as it is important to check that their eyes are developing normally.
An eye examination is also important due to children needing the following basic visual skills for learning:
- Near vision
- Distance vision
- Eye teaming (binocularity) skills
- Eye movement skills
- Focusing skills
- Peripheral awareness
- Eye/hand coordination
Children are more at risk from damaging UV rays due to the lens inside the eye being thinner and more transparent than in an adult eye, allowing more damaging UV rays to reach the retina at the back of the eye. Most of us acquire nearly 80% of our lifetime ultraviolet exposure before the age of 18. Since active children are likely to spend a lot of their time outdoors, it is important that steps are taken to safeguard their eyes from the sun and we are happy to supply a complimentry UV coating on children`s lenses.

"I was recommended Mackereth Opticians by a friend of mine and I was so glad she did. I wanted to share with you my thoughts on the excellent service we have just received. I thought my son was made to feel very at ease by the optician in his assessment and the support by the dispensing optician in selecting his glasses was super. We both felt the service was good I wanted to share it with you."
